The Secrets of Counseling? Why Does it Work ?

Ever feel so stressed-out that that you do not even want to get out of bed, or snap at practically everyone you encounter? Studies have shown that psychological counseling can significantly reduce the agitation, anxiety and depression caused by your life's daily stressors. But, exactly, how does it work?

Research studies demonstrate that psychological counseling is therapeutic. In fact, to some, this confusing and stressful world make it a necessity in order not to feel worried all the time.

It is similar to other forms of person to person communication. However, it occurs with a licensed fully trained counselor or psychologist and centers on what needs to be done to eliminate your depression or anxiety. Proven benefits include: a reduction in your anger and agitation, elevation in your mood, a more open-minded outlook and an overall sense of peace and well-being.

Psychological counseling, that is, interpersonal dialogue focused on solving personal emotional problems has been benefiting people in one form or another for centuries. Those that benefit the most, however, are those who are considered psychologically-minded.

What does that mean? If you tend to be trusting, feel OK talking to others, are reflective, thoughtful and are willing to see things from different perspectives you are more likely to benefit from psychological counseling.

There are different methods of counseling. Whether your counseling is client-centered, cognitive, psychoanalytic or rational-emotive the benefits are always positive if your counselor is licensed, appropriately trained and uses the important skills of empathy, warmth, respect and concreteness in communicating with you.

Many expert therapists combine techniques from various counseling modalities, including those above to provide the client with the therapeutic work needed to see things clearer, relieve anxiety and regenerate self-esteem. Psychological counseling is drug-free and one of the best ways available to resolve negative feelings.

Through it, you reflect on your feelings, become aware of those feelings that were previously subconscious, sort them out and take action to significantly improve your mood and quality of life. In the stressful world in which we live, it is easy to become confused, depressed and emotionally uncomfortable in our own skin. In those cases, psychological counseling is not a mere option for us, but a necessity.

Marriage counseling is related to psychological counseling. People who realize their marriage is in trouble and have not been able to improve it themselves desperately need marriage counseling.

Most marital counselors tend to be neutral and nondirective. However, others adopt the approach that they should be forthright and call it the way they see it.

They see their role as that of directly coaching or teaching them to solve the problems that are destroying their marriage. In most cases when marriage counseling is unsuccessful, the reason is that the non-directive approach is used as the counselors primary method.

On the other hand, when the directive approach is used, counselors encourage couples to pick specific goals for their therapy sessions and the steps to solution are quicker and clearer. A good counselor helps husband and wife to get their goals established.

Then a plan is developed to achieve them. Before you begin counseling, talk to several counselors in order to learn about their training and orientation. Here are some points to understand before committing yourself to marital counseling with any particular therapist.

The therapist should be willing to provide a resume which describes his education and experience in couples therapy. Find out whether your prospective therapist as more experience in saving existing marriages or in helping people getting over divorce.

Find out if your prospective counselor believes that divorce can be an option under the right circumstances. The answer might affect your choice.

A particularly sticky problem exists if one partner wants to end marriage and the other does not. Each counselor handles that problem differently but a marriage counselor should not just help each of the partners solve their problems individually, but focus on relationship issues instead.

To an important degree, the outcome of your marriage counseling will depend on the type of therapy you are receiving; and remember that salvaging your relationship is a responsibility shared between you and your counselor. Select a counselor who has a high percentage of couples staying together after completion of their counseling.
