Inspiration/Motivation - Paying Attention to Life

Author: Ruby Bayan-Gagelonia

I marveled at how my Mom always knew when I needed money. Even when I had no intention to borrow from her, she'd hand me some bills and say, "Here, I know you could use these."

How does she know? Does she somehow "feel" that the check I wrote is about to bounce? Does she hear my voice echo around my empty pocket? Half expecting the "it's a mother thing" answer, I asked her one time how she always knows when I'm flat broke. All she said was, "I just know."

Lately, this "I just know" phenomenon has been happening to me. I'd deny that it's because I'm getting old and more sensitive to my surroundings. But I'll have to admit that I see things very differently now than when I was young and shortsighted.

I'm sure a lot of people are gifted with the sight – seeing the delicate nuances of life that average folks fail to notice. But I think average folks eventually learn to "see" if they make an effort to look.

We hear if we try to listen; we feel if we try to touch; we know if we try to learn. We know a lot if we try to pay attention to life.

How do we do that? Here are some suggestions:

  • Read the signs. Listen to your body. Take note of changes and transformations. Watch how cause-and-effect works.
  • Pause and reflect. Enjoy the moment. Give yourself time to process time and space. You may gain insight if you don't have to worry about rushing through your whole life.
  • Open your heart. Empathize. Feel other people's joys and sorrows. Learn their lessons.
  • Open your mind. Absorb the old and the new, the good and the bad, the lovely and the ugly. The Desiderata says, "... listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story."
  • Be curious. Ask questions. Find answers. Be enlightened.
  • Shed your prejudices, and learn something new every day.

It's quite easy to condemn and condescend, especially in today's world of uncertainties, strong opinions, and fierce convictions. It's easy to maintain a one-track mind. But by doing so, we shut off our feelers and lose our ability to gather the pieces that we need to understand the whole.

It takes a little effort to look closely at details, but the little brushstrokes -- the fine lines and play of colors -- they define the whole picture.

If we pay attention to the gentle nuances of the things that happen around us, we may yet learn to grasp the true meaning of life >Motivational and Inspirational Corner. Or at the very least, find ourselves saying, "I just know."
