The Crystal Lake area’s first European settlers were Beman and Polly Tuttle Crandall who arrived in 1836 with their six children. They discovered a beautiful lake, woods and vast prairies. The Crandalls were awarded homestead rights in 1836.

The land around the lake, called “clear as crystal,” was first populated by Sacs and Fox Indians. With the defeat of Blackhawk in 1832, the United States government became the receiver of these prairie lands which encouraged the families of Crandall and Beardsley to homestead in 1836 and 1837. Others soon followed. In 1839-40 their village was laid out, which was until then called “Crystal Ville.” It centered around a public square where our Chamber offices are now located.

On June 6, 1908, the name of the Village of Nunda was changed to “North Crystal Lake.” On September 23, 1914, North Crystal Lake annexed to the old Village of Crystal Lake.

Today … Crystal Lake has a population in excess of 38,000, largest in McHenry County, and continues to be a good place to raise a family and work.
