Bargain Help for Anxiety,Anger and Parenting Frustrations: Self-Help Books,Groups and Sliding Scales

Rising unemployment, plunging home values and emaciated retirement portfolios take a steep toll on our mental health as well as our finances. Difficult economic conditions aggravate depression, moodiness, anxiety and anger.

Psychotherapy can help you eliminate or reduce the impact of these emotional and psychological issues. However, the same economic problems that contribute to anxiety and depression also may be making it difficult for you to afford the fees charged by private therapists, which often exceed $100 per visit.

Health insurance may help pay, but not all policies provide sufficient coverage for counseling. Also, if you are one of those who has lost his or her job in this recession, you may have lost your health insurance as well.

How to get affordable psychological help

Sliding Scale Fees

Some private therapists reduce fees for those who are unable to pay the full amount. To locate them, first, call therapists recommended by your physician, clergyman, family or friends.

Explain the reasons you are seeking therapy. Be candid about your limited finances and ask if they have a sliding scale you could access.

If a therapist says "yes," ask for the details. Make sure that you can afford it; after all, some scales will slide much further down than others. Important: If the therapist does not have such an arrangement available, ask if he knows one who does.

Group Therapy

Ask therapists if they might provide a form of group therapy which might be appropriate for you. In group therapy, four to 12 patients typically meet with the therapist together in a group setting.

The therapist then charges each patient significantly less than if they were meeting one-on-one. Importantly: If a therapist does not offer group therapy, ask if he can recommend one who does.

What if you're not the type who benefits from counseling and talking things out?

It is true that not everyone benefits from counseling and psychotherapy. What personal attributes do you need to benefit from it?

The ability to reflect and discuss issues mindfully and analytically is crucial. You must be able to trust your therapist and be enthusiastic and optimistic about the outcome.

Also, you may be one of those who is skeptical about the counseling process, have had poor results in the past or just want to try something else.

Self-therapy kits (STKs), Self-Help Books, CDs and DVDs

Self-therapy kits (STKs) are compact self-help programs that can provide valuable psychological help. Many are available and they may contain any one or any combination of the following: CDs, DVDs, MP3s, e-books, workbooks, audios, videos etc.

They are inexpensive and their fees are one-time only, rather than repetitive as in counseling. They can vary in cost anywhere from a one-time fee of $9.99 to $100 or slightly more.

They are used in the privacy of your home, are self-paced and are available to you 24/7. They provide psychological information and use visualization, behavioral exercises and systems for the accurate monitoring of your feelings and progress to reduce the impact of your stress.

These are educational materials and, therefore, there are no side-effects, prescriptions or doctor visits with which to contend. You may even want to test them before participating in counseling because they may help reduce your symptoms on their own.

What if you are already in some form of counseling?

However, if you're already in a form of sliding scale or group counseling, using them simultaneously could shorten the time required for your symptoms to disappear. Using an STK while engaging in treatment may boost both the speed and quality of your recovery.

How do you find these inexpensive self-therapy kits (STKs)? Just go to the internet and search for "self-help" "self-improvement," "anxiety, depression self-help" etc. and be sure to study the brochures carefully.
